Intersection between implicit surfaces

Suppose I have two implicit surfaces generated using metaballs as shown in the picture below.



Implcit Surfaces - Metaball



Those surfaces are basically just sum of the potential functions of its circles, below are the functions.



Surface 1 :



Surface 1



Surface 2 :



Surface 2



Is there any way to check whether those two surfaces intersect? (the point of intersection is not important in my case). Just to know if those two intersect is enough.
